My new ceramic wave sculptures (created in 2023) originated from a plaster cast of my belly during my 2020 pregnancy. The mold sat in my studio as a beautiful reminder for a couple of years. I wasn’t really sure what to do with it. Then it hit me—the shape could be used to make waves. Thus, I started phase 2 of my ceramic wave sculpture journey. Raku Goddess

The Raku Water Goddess was first thrown on the wheel, sculpted and fired to 1000°C. In the Raku firing, the goddess is pulled from the kiln glowing hot and placed in a can with newspaper and sawdust. The sculpture ignites the material and the smoke blackens the white stoneware clay and creates the rainbow of colors achieved only with the Raku Firing process.
