Care, Use & Durability of Handmade Ceramics

Are handmade ceramics safe for food and drink?

Yes. My functional stoneware pieces are fired at high temperatures and finished with food-safe glazes. They are designed for everyday use with food and drink.

When purchasing handmade ceramics in general, it’s always a good idea to confirm that pieces intended for food use are made with food-safe glazes and properly fired. Modern studio ceramics typically follow these standards, but this has not always been the case historically, particularly with some older decorative glazes.

Are your ceramics dishwasher- and microwave-safe?

Yes. Most of my stoneware pieces are durable and safe for everyday use, including the dishwasher and microwave. However, for delicate or decorative items I recommend hand-washing to help preserve glaze textures. As with any ceramic, avoid sudden extreme temperature changes.

Can handmade ceramics be used in the oven?

Most stoneware can handle moderate oven temperatures, but it’s best to avoid sudden temperature changes. Always place ceramics in a cool oven and allow them to heat gradually rather than placing them into a fully preheated oven.

What is thermal shock, and how can I avoid it?

Thermal shock occurs when a ceramic piece experiences a sudden change in temperature. For example, placing a hot mug or bowl directly onto a very cold surface can create stress in the clay and cause cracks. To avoid this, allow ceramics to heat and cool gradually and avoid moving them quickly between extreme temperatures.

Are handmade ceramics fragile?

Stoneware is a durable ceramic material designed for everyday use. Like any ceramic, it can break if dropped or knocked against a hard surface, but with normal care it should last for many years.

Will my piece look exactly like the photos?

Each piece is handmade, so slight variations in shape, glaze, and surface texture are natural and part of the character of the work. No two pieces are exactly alike.

How should ceramic art pieces be displayed?

Ceramic vessels and sculptures can be displayed on shelves, tables, or pedestals. Avoid placing them where they might be knocked or exposed to extreme temperature changes. Natural light is fine, but direct prolonged sunlight may gradually affect some glaze surfaces.

Why is handmade pottery more expensive than factory ceramics?

Handmade ceramics take time. Each piece is shaped, finished, glazed, and fired by hand, often over several days. Small studios also work with limited batches and carefully developed glazes and materials. What you’re buying is not just an object, but the time, skill, and creative process behind it.

How can you tell if a ceramic piece is handmade?

Handmade ceramics often show subtle variations that reveal the maker’s process. You may notice slight differences in shape, small tool marks, or variations in glaze where the piece interacted with the kiln. These characteristics are part of what makes handmade pottery unique—each piece carries traces of the hands and processes that formed it.

Additionally, the piece will usually be signed our stamped with the author’s symbol or signature.

Shipping & Orders

Do U.S. customers need to pay tariffs or import duties?

No. Orders shipped to the United States are sent Delivered Duties Paid (DDP), which means any tariffs or import duties are covered in advance. Your piece should arrive without any additional customs charges.

Do you ship ceramics internationally?

Yes — I ship worldwide. Shipping costs are calculated automatically at checkout when available. If your location isn’t listed or no rate is generated, just contact me and I’ll send you a custom quote.

How long will it take to receive my order?

Typical domestic (EU) shipping takes 3–7 business days. For international orders, delivery can take 7–14 business days depending on customs & local postal services.

Can I order a custom ceramic sculpture or piece?

Perhaps. I welcome custom inquiries! Please send me your ideas, reference images, and dimensions. We can discuss whether it’s feasible, timeline, and cost before starting.

Refunds, Returns & Damages

What if my piece arrives broken or damaged?

I pack with care using eco-friendly, shock-absorbing materials. If your artwork arrives damaged, please send clear photos within 48 hours of receipt. I will work with you to file a claim with the carrier and arrange a replacement where possible

Can I return a piece if I change my mind?

I want you to be 100% happy with your new purchase. I try my best to reflect the item’s true appearance and characteristics in my shop. However, these are handmade items, and by nature, they will have variations in the size and shape of each piece, or small markings from the handmade process. If the item you receive is not to your liking, I will accept a return within 30 days of purchase.

Materials, Studio & Sustainability

What materials do you use?

My work is made from high-fire stoneware clays, often layered, textured, and altered by hand. Glazes use natural oxides and reactive chemistry. Everything is shaped with care and intention.

Is your studio environmentally conscious?

Yes — my studio runs on renewable energy, and I use plastic-free and compostable packaging wherever possible. I reduce, re-use and recycle whenever it’s possible. Sustainability is not an afterthought; it’s built into every choice.
