About Amelia Johannsen

I discovered a natural passion for working with clay at a young age.

I found an innate sense of comfort and connection with my hands in the mud. The woods near my Portland, OR home provided the freedom I craved, while the clay studio became my haven of creative expression. Even as I explored more conventional career paths, my love for clay and nature never waned. They have always been guiding forces, helping me to uncover the significance and meaning behind my experiences.

After settling in Barcelona, I returned to my art.

I spent years exploring various areas of ceramic creation, including raku, pit, and single firing techniques. I developed unique methods for creating and applying glazes and creating textures. Over time, my practice expanded to include sculpture and mixed media, embracing the raw beauty of natural materials and the stories they tell.

My work is all about the connection between humans and nature, and the healing power that comes with it.

I love creating pieces that evoke movement and transformation, reminding us that change is a constant in life. From functional ceramics to mosaics and abstract art, I find joy in piecing together fragments—both in art and in life.

Influenced by ecofeminism and existentialist thought, my work often explores how societal structures and environmental degradation affect our connection to the natural world. I aim to challenge consumerist values and encourage reflection on our shared responsibility to the planet.

Through my art, I share my core values.

Mindfulness, environmentalism, feminism, and compassion for all beings are at the heart of my creative expression. I also write about my process and thoughts on my blog and on FrikiFish, an online magazine I founded to spotlight emerging talent in Barcelona.
